Early views of emotions offer localized emotions to various internal organs (liver & heart). Private events, own emotions must be either described to others or inferred. Emotional states-physical sensation of emotion & cognitive experience of feeling. Internal : increase/decrease heart rate, blood pressure, stomach motility, perspiration. External: motor response, facial expressions, thoughts related to experience. Darwin said that emotional states occur innately in children thus are. Said that there are universal states that all humans express. Tested on the fore bribe (never exposed to western culture) Asked to identify emotions from picture-usually quite accurate. Did not suggest that emotional state was localized in brain. Universal basic emotions that occur in all humans-mediated by similar areas of the brain. Ekman said that for emotions to be considered basic, must exhibit following 7 elements. Facial expressions 5 physiological states that occur together and are difficult to separate. Onset of the facial expressions & physiological state, which lasts for brief duration.
