Chapter 2: where does power in willpower come from. By relaxing before lent, people could store up the willpower necessary to sustain themselves through weeks of self-denial. Mardi gras theory- baumeister"s did an experiment in which his chefs gave ice cream to participants who were resting in between two task that required willpower. Other participants were either given magazines to read or a large tasteless concoction to drink. Subjects given milkshakes in between sessions strengthened their willpower by helping them perform better on the next task. The joyless drink also worked just as well though for self-control, suggesting that building willpower does not require happy self-indulgence. The transformation of psychology based on the ideas of biology was one of the major developments of the 20th century. Some researchers found that genes have important effects on intelligence and personality. The energy in juice is converted to glucose, which is a simple sugar manufactured in the body from all kinds of foods.
