Document Summary

Chapter 1: is willpower more than a metaphor. Baumeister: college students walked into a laboratory and were hunger because they had been fasting. Some studies were invited to eat the cookies and candies. The other students were told they had to eat the radish. People in radish condition instructed to only eat radish. They clearly struggled with the temptation not to eat the cookies. The cookies were tempting, and participants needed to summon up their willpower to resist them. The participants then worked on a geometry puzzle and the task was to see how long they would work before they gave up. (reliable indicator of perservance-studied among stress researchers) Students that were allowed to eat the candy and cookies worked on the puzzles for 20 mins and so did the control group. The students that were assigned to the radish condition only worked on the puzzles for only eight minutes.
