Document Summary
Crime can frighten as well as anger. Crime: conduct or failure to act in violation of the law forbidding or commanding it, and for which a range of possible penalties exist upon conviction. To be convicted of crime, a person must have acted intentionally and without justification or excuse. For example, even an intentional killing may be justified under certain circumstances, as in defense of one"s life: narrow range of offenses that do not require criminal intent (called strict liability offenses), vast majority of crime requires it. General public, public officials, politicians offer incomplete solutions for crime such as throwing one in jail rather than getting to the root cause of such crimes. Solutions such as reducing economic inequality, improving educational opportunities, or offering substance abuse treatment are effective; however require public commitment, energy and financial resources. Crime is very complex however, we want simple answers for it.
