May be used to predict (+) characteristics: consist of 2 basic approaches threat assessment determining the validity and seriousness of threat being carried out by a person/group of ppl (usually, he threat has already been made) Risk assessment comes even if no direct threat has been made. Evaluates indvis who have violated social norms. Goal is to est the prob a person will harm self/others, & esp, to provide what can be done to prevent the harm. Behavioral sceince unit: primarily was used to investigate assistance to law enforcement in cases of serial homicide and serial rape.
