Recall memory - reporting details of previously witnessed event or person, e. g. appearance. Recognition memory - determining whether a previously seen item or person is the same as what is currently being viewed; e. g. hearing voices and identifying that of the criminal. Canada"s witness protection program - protecting witnesses short-term or relocating them permanently, with identity changes; safer witnesses act. Can use archival data (police reports), examine witnesses in naturalistic environments by going with the cops to crime scenes; lab simulation is the most common paradigm. Participant views crime through video or live but doesn"t know they will be questioned later; when questioning, might be asked to examine lineup; many iv but 3 dv. Dependent variables: 3 general dv - recall of event/crime, recall of perpetrator, recognition of perp. Primary goal of interviewing - extract complete, accurate report of what happened. Analyzed tape-recorded interviews - lots of variation in how they were conducted.
