PSYC51H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Shalden, Safety Pin, Illusory Contours
Document Summary
Goal of vision is to take the array of light that hits the retina and derive a representation of the things that gave rise to it. Color perception begins with partitioning of light signal in to three wavelength ranges corresponding to three cone types. Color contrast enhanced by p cells whose center-surround receptive field structures respond to discontinuities between colors. Contrast continues in parvocellular layers on lgn. In v1 cells in layers 2 and 3 carry color info in blob and interblob regions- blob cells more tuned to color. Contrast effects enhanced by double opponent responses in some cells- center surround organization in which complementary colors have opposite excitatory and inhibitory effects in a given region of the visual field. Blobs project to thin stripes in v2 which has color sensitive responses which then project to v4. Receptive fields wavelength selective as opposed to color selective. Color of an object is determined by the wavelengths that are absorbed.
