First half of 20th century- barbiturate = prescription for relieving anxiety. 1951: addictive properties more dangerous than heroin or cocaine. Signi cant anxiety provoked by exposure to a speci c feared object or situation. Occurs as something far more severe than a general dislike for something. May cause signi cant disruptions in normal daily living. Social phobia- fear of being in or performing in social or public situations. Anxiety arising over obsession and compulsive behavior that endeavors to reduce this anxiety. Obsession- persistent ideas, thoughts, impulses, images that are experienced as intrusive and inappropriate (ex. Engage in compulsive behavior to reduce the anxiety (ex. Persistent state of physiological arousal/exaggerated response to certain stimuli, particularly those associated with a traumatic event. Agoraphobia- fear of being in a situation from which escape is dif cult or embarrassing. Panic attacks- may occur in any anxiety disorder but occur as the primary feature of panic disorder.
