Document Summary

Invented cultural psychology; precursor to social psychology. Noted that complex psychological processes could not be understood using experimental method; required naturalistic observation to identify social and cultural factors. Experimental method was derived from established disciplines, particularly chemistry. Goal to identify elementary units; complex ideas were made up of multiple simpler ideas. Introspection: observation of one"s own mental processes: wundt made a distinction between self-observation and inner perception, self-observation is open to bias. Inner perception: deliberately observing one"s own mental processes, under strictly controlled conditions: ex: metronome experiment. Trained participants identify what experiences the metronome sound induces. Beats have same physical characteristics, different psychological characteristics (tic-toc) Can induce emotion by manipulating speed of metronome. Tridimensional theory of feeling: the theory that any feeling can be thought of as located within three dimensional space consisting of tension-relief, excitement-depression, and pleasant-unpleasant. Volition: the act of will: emotional process. Voluntary acts: conflicting emotions which cause acts of will to develop more slowly.
