Document Summary
Disorders --> usually defined with respect to behaviors that are rare and cause some kind of impairment to the individuals (note that there are exceptions) The idea of what a disorder is varies and depends on the set of values that exists in a culture: example: the dhat disorder in southeast asia --> wouldn"t be considered a disorder in. In other cases, disorders classified in the west reflect culturally specific ways of thinking that are really not meaningful in other cultures. Culture-bound syndromes --> those that appear to be greatly influenced by cultural factors, and hence occur fat less frequently, or are manifested in highly divergent ways, in other cultures: e. g. , hikikomori and dhat syndrome. In order to understand culture-bound syndromes, we must consider the cultural values and understandings that go along with them.
