Description
Chapter 1 - Scientific Understanding of Behaviour Uses of Research Methods  a background in research methods will help you to read reports critically, evaluate the methods employed , and decide whether the conclusions are reasonable The Scientific Approach  many people rely on intuition and authority as ways of knowing The Limitations of Intuition and Authority Intuition  when you rely on intuition, you accept unquestioningly what your own personal judgement or a single story about one person's experience tells you  it involves finding an explanation for our own behaviours or the behaviours of others  other times, it is used to explain intriguing events that you observe  a problem with intuition is that numerous cognitive and motivational biases affect our perceptions and we may draw erroneous conclusions about cause and effect  we do this because of a cognitive bias called illusory correlation - occurs when we focus on two events that stand out and occur together Authority  many people are all too ready to accept anything they learn from the Internet, news media, books and government  they believe statements of authorities must be true since they are convincing and influential 
