Anorexia nervosa (an), anorexia refers to loss of appetite and nervosa indicates that this is for emotional reasons. > the person refuses to maintain normal body weight, weight loss is achieved through dieting and purging (self-induced vomiting, laxatives, diuretics) and excessive exercise. > the person has an intense fear of gaining weight and the fear isn t reduced by weight loss; they can never be thin enough. > patients have a distorted sense of their body shape they gaze critically @ mirrors; overevaluation of appearance, the tendency to link self esteem and self evaluation w/ thinness. > extreme emaciation causes amenorrhea, the loss of the menstrual period. Restricting type, weight loss is achieved by severely limiting food intake. Binge eating-purging type, the person regularly engages in binge eating and purging. > psychopathological; patients exhibit more personality disorders, impulsive bhvr, stealing, alcohol, drug abuse, social withdrawal, and suicide attempts than do the previous patients.
