1 Introduction to Behaviour Modification The characteristics that define behaviour include: 1. Behaviour is what people do and say Described with action verbs Not a static characteristics of the person Saying a person is angry, does not identify the persons behaviour 2. Behaviours have one or more dimensions that can be measured Can measure frequency, duration, and the intensity of a behaviour or the physical forced involved in the behaviour 3. Behaviours can be observed, described, and recorded by others or by the person engaging in the behaviour 4. Behaviours have an impact on the environment All human behaviour operates on the physical or social environment in some way, regardless of whether we are aware of its impact Example - You turn the light switch, the light bulb lights up, sometimes it has an effect only on the person who engages in the behaviour 5. Behaviour is lawful Its occurrence is systematically influenced by environmental events Once a person understands the environmental events that cause behaviour to occur, heshe can change the events in environment to alter behaviour Example disruptive behaviour of an autistic child is related to the level of teacher attention www.notesolution.com
