Chapter 19 Promoting Generalization Generalization: increases the chances that the behaviour change will occur in all relevant situations in ones life o Occurrence of the behaviour in the presence of stimuli that are similar in some way to the discriminative stimulus o Training is not successful until the behaviour generalizes to other situations Strategies for Promoting Generalization Reinforce the behaviour when it occurs outside the training situation in the presence of relevant stimuli o This way, all relevant stimuli develop stimulus control over the behaviour o Con = not always possible to provide reinforcement for the behaviour outside the training situation Train skills that will result in natural contingencies of reinforcement in relevant situation o Ex Problem behaviours were reduced when students learned to ask for attention, assistance, or food items using assistive communication devices Generalization occu
