Chapter 2 y Fundamental aspect of behaviour modification is measuring the behaviour that is targeted for changey Measurement of the target behaviour is called behavioural assessmenty Indirect behavioural assessmento Involves interviews questionnaires and rating scales to obtain information on the target behaviour from the person exhibiting the behaviour or from others o Does not occur when the target behaviour occurs but relied on an individuals recall of the target behavioury Direct behavioural assessmento Person observes and records the target behaviour as it occurso Observer must be in close proximity to the person exhibiting the behaviour so that the target behaviour can be seeno Observer must have a precise definition of the target behaviouro More accurate then indirect assessmenty Steps needed to develop a behaviour recording plan1 Defining the target behaviour y You must identify exactly what the person says or does that constitutes the behavioural excess or deficit targeted for changey A behavioural definition is objective and ambiguousy Does not make an inference about the persons intentionsy A characteristic of a good behavioural definition is that after seeing the definition different people can observe the same behaviour and agree that the behaviour is occurringy Interobserver agreementreliability when two people independently observe the same behaviour and both record that the behaviour occurred y Look at table 21 page 202 Determining the logistics of recordingy The target behaviour is typically observed and recorded by a person other than the one exhibiting the target behaviour
