Description
CHAPTER 9 SHAPINGDefining shaping Shaping is used to develop a target behaviour that a person doesnt currently exhibit defined as the differential reinforcement of successive approximations of a target behaviour until the person exhibits the target behaviour differential reinforcement involves the basic principles of reinforcement and extinction Occurs when one particular behaviour is reinforced and all other behaviours arent reinforced in a particular situation As a result the behaviour that is reinforced increases and the other behaviours decrease through extinction bc they arent being reinforced Successive approximations shaping steps Eg in learning how to speak 1 you identify an existing behaviour that is an approximation of the target behaviourstarting behaviour or first approximation this would be babbling for learning how to speak 2 reinforce the starting behaviour and this behaviour will increase 3 stop reinforcing the behaviour and an extinction burst will occur causing novel behaviours to appear 4 start reinforcing a novel behaviour that is a closer approximation to the target behaviour 5 as a result the novel behaviour increases 6 he process of differential reinforcement continues until the target behaviour is
