Chapter 2: Observing and Recording Behaviour One fundamental aspect of behaviour modification is measuring he behaviour that is targeted for change Behavioural assessment: measurement of target behaviour Behavioural assessment is important: Measuring behaviour before treatment provides information that can help determine whether treatment is necessary Behavioural assessment can provide information that helps choose best treatment Measuring target behaviour before and after treatment allows to determine whether behaviour changes after treatment was implemented Two types of behavioural assessment: Indirect: involves using interviews, questionnaires, rating scales to obtain information on target behaviour from person exhibiting behaviour or from others Direct: person observes and records target behaviour as it occurs. To observe target behaviour, observer must be in close proximity to person exhibiting behaviour so that target behaviour can be seen or heard o More accurate than indirect o Observe trained specifically to observe target behaviour and record its occurrence immediately o Indirect: info on target behaviour depends on peoples memories Direct assessment methods: 1. Defining target behaviour Must identify exactly what person says or does that constitutes the behavioural excess or deficit targeted for change Definition is objective and unambiguous
