In the past, caucasians were comfortable with openly expressing prejudiced racial attitudes, because the culture in american society was such that overt hostility toward other races, discrimination, and segregation of other races from the caucasian-dominated culture were the norm! It took american society over 30 more years (1950) to acknowledge its deep racial prejudice. Implicit in these questions & their answers were the beginning of a shift in the way prejudiced people were viewed. Therefore, stereotypes were coming to be understood as attitudes (negative evaluations, rather than pictures in our head) that some people endorse but others do not. Here was a turning point in understanding prejudice and stereotyping. From katz & braly to civil rights, and beyond. With katz & braly"s (1993) landmark study, researchers obtained their first view of the content of racial stereotypes that caucasians held about african americans. Early data suggested that caucasians held very negative views of african americans and very positive views of caucasians.
