Introduction
Hindus seek an experience called darshana to see a guru (holy teacher)
They live through sacred words such as mantras words repeated during
meditation
‘Hinduism’
Some classes refer not Hinduism but sanatana dharma (eternal faith)
Sanskrit the ancient language of India
Dharma Sanskrit word for order and duty in religious faith
Origins
1. The Harappa Culture
People were known to be great builders and the great Shiva figure in a
yoga position was found while excavating
Sati suicide of a widow
2. The Indo-Europeans
People who knew the language of Sanskrit were Indo-Europeans
They composed many poems, and manuals on rituals
o The Vedas (known as knowledge) was one of the earliest forms of
composed literature done by Indo-Europeans
There are 4 Vedic collections and within these are 4 sections
1. hymns Samhitas
2. directions for sacred rituals Brahmanas
3. compositions of the forest Aranyakas
4. sitting near the teacher Upanishads, also texts that reported
conversations on the ritual of knowledge
Status of the Vedas
Vedas contains hymns, philosophy, and guidance on Vedic religion
Brahmins a class that is allowed to learn the Vedas, also ‘highest’ status in Hindu
Vedic Hymns
Brahmanas texts containing rituals
Karma and Samsara
Karma actions, both good and bad, will be reflected upon our incarnation
Samsara cycle of rebirths
Atman and Brahman
Atman individual self, similar to brahman
Brahman world soul
