Social stratification- refers to the way in which society is organized in layers or strata. They use shipwreck as a literary device. Example would be titanic which is on a shipwreck. Income quintile share: measures the share of total income earned by each income ranked fifth of the population. Rank families in the population from those with lowest incomes to those with highest incomes compute the total income generated by all families. Divide the rank ordered families into five equal size categories. Another measure used to track income inequality is gini coefficient: reports the proportion of total income that would have to be redistributed for perfect equality to exist. >varies between 0 (every family earns the same amount) and 1. 0 ( one family earns everything. United states has the highest level of income inequality of any wealthy country. The northern european countries do a much better job in canada does of redistributing income and combining the government policies.
