SEX VS GENDER Is it a Boy or a Girl y Dr John Money would assign people their sexDid that to this boy who had his private accidently removed by a doctor or a needle malfunctionhe changed from Bruce to Brendabut studies later show that as a girl he was depressed so then he learned about his past and changed back to a boy named Davis but eventually ended up committing suicide y Intersexed infants are babies with ambiguous genitals because of a hormone imbalance in the womb or some other case Gender Identity and Gender Role y How do u know if someone is a male or female o 1 Sex your sex depends on whether u were born with distinct amlefemale genitals and a genetic program that released either male or female hormones to stimulate the development of your reproductive system goes with functionalist theory o 2 Gender your gender is ur sense of being a male or female and your playing of masculine and feminine roles in ways defined as appropriate by your culture and society goes with conflict feminist and symbolic interactionist theoryGender identity is a persons identification with or sense of belonging to a particular sex biologically psychologically and sociallyA gender role is the set of behaviors associated with widely shared expectations about how males and females are supposed to act y Social learning allows u to develop the identity of yourselfwhen BruceBrendaDavid went through surgery at age of 22 months he already learned he was a boy because social learning rdusually takes place in the 2 or 3 ageresearchers believe if Bruce did surgery before he was 18 and before social learning takes place then the surgery would have been successful y Heterosexuality is the preference for members of opposite sex as sexual partnersTHEORIES OF GENDER Essentialism y Essentialism is a school of thought that views gender differences as a reflection of biological differences bw men and women social constructionism is another theory that thinks oppositely of essentialism and says that gender is constructed by culture and social structure y Freud
