SOCC30H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1-3: Uniform Crime Reports, Real Crime, Major Crimes
Document Summary
While media is interested in romantic homicides, most of them aren"t. The dramatic fallacy states that the most publicized offenses are very distant from real life. The media are carried away by a horror-distortion sequence- they find horror story and entertain the public, making money and then they build on that myth for the next horror story and then public misinformation grows. These distortions can cause a moral panic. Looking at uniform crime report it shows that major violent crimes outnumber the murder category 80 to 1. Major property crimes outnumber by 625 to 1. Murder has 2 central features: a gun too near and a hospital too far - most people causing harm do not know where the harm will lead to. Most quarrels do not lead to threats, most threats do not lead to blows, most blows don"t lead to harm . National crime victim survey: most hospitalization rarely lead to death.
