Document Summary
Data collection of numbers, characters, images or other items that provide information about something. If we do not know what attributes or characteristics are measured and who they are measured on, the values displayed are meaningless. The rows of a data table correspond to individual cases about whom (or about which, if they"re not people) we record some characteristics. These characteristics or variables are constituting the what of the study: the who or the cases go by different names, depending on the situation. Individuals who answer a survey are called respondents. People on whom we experiment are subjects or participants: animals, plants, web sits and other inanimate subjects are often called experimental units. Often we called cases as records: often the cases are a sample from some larger population that we"d like to understand. The most important thing when analyzing the data is knowing the who and what.
