Document Summary

Chapter 10 re-expressing data: get it straight. Goals of re-expression help make the data more suitable for analysis by statistical methods. Goal 1: make the distribution of a variable more symmetric (making it easier to summarize) Goal 2: make the spread of side-by-side boxplots more alike, even if centres differ (making them easier to compare) Goal 3: make the form of a scatterplot more nearly linear (making them easier to understand) Goal 4: make the scatter of a plot spread out more evenly rather than thickening at one end. Taking logs of the data values can make distributions more symmetric, spreads more equal, or plots more linear. The ladder of powers orders the effects that the re-expressions have on data; moving farther down the ladder will have a stronger effect on your data. When you take a negative power, the direction of the relationship will change.
