A place of europe"s greatest, richest, oldest companies, source of its civilizations, languages, & culture. Orient helped define europe"s (west) image, idea, personality, & experience. It"s a part of europe"s material civilization & culture expressed & represented through institutions, vocab, scholarship, imagery, doctrines, etc. Recent japanese, indochinese, & korean adventures have more sober & realistic awareness, so. Those teaching, writing, or researching the orient (anthropologist, sociologist, historian, or philologist) is an orientalist & what they do is orientalism. The term isn"t used by specialists today because it"s too vague & general but books are still written about it.
