In avant-garde & jazz-rock fusion, music is emphasized more than variation in mood, sound qualities & rhythms: layers of sound, one on top of another, all moving forward in time. Texture created by accompanying instruments: hum original tune while listening to improvisations guided by chord changes. Help recognize chords in accompaniment more clearly: listen to every note in soloist"s improvisation. Improvise means to compose & perform at the same time. Jazz is guided by musicians maintaining a given tempo, key & progression of accompaniment chords. Invent melodies that are compatible with those chords. Improvised lines are rarely variations on original melody. Progression of accompaniment chords is the similarity between original & improvised melodies. Melody is presented in 12 bar blues, played twice.
