Chapter: the principles and goals of global health. Over the last fifty years, the world has made significant progress in improving human health. Death rates of children has fallen, average life expectancy increasing, smallpox eradicated, and great progress has been made in reducing the burden of vaccine preventable disease in children and of parasitic infection. One reason to study global health is to gain a better understanding of the progress made so far in addressing global health problems. Another reason to study global health, however, is to better understand the most important global health challenges that remain and what must be done to address them most effectively.
