Document Summary
Cell cycle is the process through which a cell duplicates its contents and divides into two so it is the base of reproduction of all organisms. In a mammalian cell the events of cell cycle are divided into two distinct phases: s phase (dna synthesis phase) and m phase (mitosis) in which segregation of chromosome and cell division takes place. Mitosis is comprised of two events: nuclear division (mitosis) and cytoplasmic division (cytokinesis). The copied chromosomes are distributed into pair of daughter nuclei during nuclear division; followed by cytokinesis where cell divides into two. Cytokinesis produces two daughter cells are produced with one of the two nuclei. There are two gap phases in the cell cycle: g1 and g2. Gap phases are characterized as preparatory phases for the major events of cell cycle: g1 occurs between m phase and s phase, g2 occurs between s phase and m phase, g1, s and g2 together are called interphase.
