Document Summary
Physiological ecology as a way of thinking about organisms. Abiotic factor; manifestations of the non-living, physico-chemical world. Biotic factors; factor arising from the actions of other organisms. Limiting factors: factors that are most important in determining whether a species can or cannot persist in an area. Environmental gradient: gradual change in abiotic factors through space (or time) How environmental factors determine distribution and abundance: all organisms have restricted spatial distributions. If environmental factors in a particular habitat are too harsh for a particular o species, it will not be able to persist there: abiotic factors are subdivided into two categories; conditions and resources. We look at these factors in two lights; abiotic factors and abiotic factors: resources are necessary physical entities that organisms use up. Examples could be water, nutrients, and space: conditions are physical states that cannot be depleted.
