Document Summary

Y rer (rough endoplasmic reticulum, contains ribosomes) synthesis of transmembrane, organellar and secreted proteins y ser (smooth) phospholipid synthesis, detoxification. Since the ser is involved with detox it is found in liver cells y endomembrane system: consists of the endosome, lysosomes, peroxisome, golgi apparatus, and. Each signal sequence directs the protein to a different place. The sequences are recognized by sorting receptors that take proteins to their destination. Signal peptidases remove the sequence from the finished protein. Signal sequences are hydrophobic y 2 kinds of transmembrane proteins: single pass & multipass. Single pass: the amino acid chain passes through the membrane only once. Multipass: kinda obvious what this is y golgi apparatus: receives proteins and lipids from the er, modifies them, & dispatches them to other destinations in the cell. Also involved in: glycosylation of lipids, & extracellular matrix (ecm) of animal cells. Some proteins are sorted back to the er from the golgi y.
