Document Summary

Important components of compound light microscope: light source (external/built in) to illuminate specimen, sub-stage condenser lens to gather diffuse rays from light source. Illuminates specimen w/ small cone of bright light. Can see small parts of specimen: objective lens: Collect light rays focused on specimen by condenser lens. Two sets of light rays enter objective lens: Those specimen has altered: emanates parts of specimen, forms the image. Those specimen hasn"t altered: light from condenser that passes directly into objective lens, forms background light of visual field, ocular lens: Image formed by objective is used as object of ocular lens to form enlarged virtual image: eye. Uses virtual image produced by ocular lens as object to produce real image on retina. When turn focusing knob, changes relative distance between specimen and objective lens: makes final image more focused on plane of retina. Total magnification = magnification of objective lens x magnification ocular lens.
