Document Summary

Reading questions #3: the authors use previous research to explain the importance of their study by listing research that found that exploitative partners lower the fitness of the host. They manipulated herbivory by directly excluding herbivorous insects. They had 5 experimental trials, 4 of which contained different mutualistic strains of nitrogen fixing bacteria and the 5th trial contained the exploitative species along with the 4 mutualistic strains. The authors used 15 m. lupulina plants that originated from the same location where the experiment was taking place. These plants were selfed for one generation and their seeds were sterilized and placed promoted to grow, then placed in pots to grow. The seeds were inoculated with the appropriate treatment 1 week prior to planting. The plants were planted in special pots to prevent their exposure to the microbes in the soil and contaminated water.
