The spatial and mechanical functions that maintains the rearrangement of internal components as the cell grow, divide and adapt to changes in environment depend on a remarkable system of laments called the cytoskeleton. There are three different type of protein families that make the cytoskeleton so diverse: Actin filaments determine the shape of the surface of cell and are intermediate laments necessary for whole-cell locomotion. Microtubules are involved in a number of processes: Intermediate laments provide mechanical strength to the cell. All cytoskeletal laments interact with hundreds of accessory proteins that form the mitotic spindle that segregates chromosomes during cell division regulate and link the laments to each other and to other cell components. One important accessory protein is the motor proteins. Motor protein convert the energy of atp hydrolysis into mechanical force that can either move organelles along the laments or move the laments themselves. Actin filament form the microvilli on the surface of intestinal epithelial cells.
