Document Summary

Chapter 13 - dionysus, pan, echo and narcissus. Disguised as a moral, zeus had an affair with semele, daughter of cadmus. Hera found out and wanted to get even. She disguised herself as an old woman and convinced semele that she should ask her lover (zeus) to appear as his divine self. Semele first convinced zeus to grant her whatever she asked of him and when he agreed, she revealed she wanted to see his divine self. Zeus was unwilling but he promised and so semele was burned into ash. His child, since he was divine did not burn and so zeus sewed him up onto his thigh so the boy would be born when he was ready (too early) Dionysus had many nymph nurses, such as nysa - mountain nymph -- very famous mountain);; or semele"s sister as nurse. Dionysus is the god of vegetation in general and specifically the grape vine. (making and drinking wine)
