Document Summary

Chapter 23: theseus and the legends of attica. Cecrops, erichthonius, and erechtheus autochthonous ( sprung from the earth"), that"s what the athenians boasted. They said that their earliest kind, cecrops, had sprung from the earth and was serpent-shaped on the lower half of his body. Erichthonius = half serpent-shape and sprung from the earth, he is the result of hephaestus attempting to violate athena (he was born from the semen falling on the ground) athena brought him to the daughters of. Cecrops (aglauros, herse and pandrosos) in a chest, and forbade them to look inside. They opened it and went insane looking at him and killed themselves. Herse and he turned her into a rock: they had a child together named cephalus. He then became the king of athens and instituted the great annual festival and setting up a wooden statue of athena in acropolis. Both erichthonius and his son erechtheus are forms of poseidon.
