Zeus Against Cronus The Battle With the TitansWith overthrow of Uranus Cronus became the first king of the world He ruled over a complex realm filled with many new beingsHad to be underhanded violent and suspicious to maintain his power Told by his parents that he would fall victim to one of his children feared his children and swallowed them as fast as they issued forth from his wife and sister RheaChildren were Hestia Demeter Hera Hades Poseidon and Zeus the six gods who would one day divide the power of the world among themselves Rhea went to her parents Gaea and Uranus for advicejourney to Crete and bear her youngest child Zeus She did and hid him in a mountain cave where he was brought up by nymphs on milk from the goat Amalthea and honey from Melissa the beeZeuss infant cries drowned by clashing cymbals of the Corybantes whirlers known as Curetes young manwarriors When Cronus asked for the latest child she gave him a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes and he gulped it down saved Zeus and grew into manhood Hesiod strangely silent about what happened next Zeus eventually forced Cronus to vomit up the children Zeuss brothers and sisters Now Zeus became king of the gods and he and his brothers and sisters took up their abode on Mount Olympus except for Hades who ruled the underworldTitans resented their rule they banded together and attacked the Olympians in the stupendous Titanomachy battle of the Titans and only the Titan Themis and her son Prometheus dared side with Zeus Zeus learned from Gaea that he could win the battle only with the help of the three Hecatonchires the hundredhandersreleased them and the Cyclopes from Tartarus where Uranus fearing their power had imprisoned themAfter being imprisoned so long gained strength from drinking a mythical drink called nectar and food known as ambrosia In gratitude Cyclopes made thunderbolt for Zeus his special weapon as they were smiths Perspective 41 Goyas Saturn Devouring His ChildrenWith the help of the three Hecatonchires Zeus cast the Titans into black distant TartarusAtlas either a Titan a son of Uranus or Giant son of Iapetus and an Oceanid was condemned by Zeus to live at the edge of the world where he held up the heavens ensuring the continued separation of the Sky and the Earth Zeuss Battle With TyphoeusGaea coupled with Tartarus and gave birth to the monstrous Tarphoeus Typhon Born in Cilicia southern coast of modern Turkey and was so huge that he towered above the mountains and his head struck the stars One hand
