Wood frogs spend the winter buried beneath leaf litter. They don"t breathe and their blood doesn"t flow. Mating season as soon as woken up. Internal freezing allows wood frog to be most northernly amphibians. 4 weeks old venture out for the first time. Providing milk for so many pups is hard on the young mother. Has to wait for mate to return with food (sort of parental care for father. Hard to provide food in bleak landscape. Neither parent leaves nest until eggs hatch. Caribou like to feed here because of goose droppings.
