Document Summary
The perceiver"s experience, needs, and emotions can affect his or her perceptions of a target. Frequently, our needs unconsciously influence our perceptions by causing us to perceive what we wish to perceive. In some cases, our perceptual system serves to defend us against unpleasant emotions. We see what we want to see or hear what we want to hear . Perception involves interpretation and the addition of meaning to the target, and ambiguous targets are especially susceptible to interpretation and addition. Perceivers have a need to resolve such ambiguities. Perception is the process of interpreting the messages of our senses to provide order and meaning to the environment. Perception helps us sort out and organize the complex and varied input received by our sense of sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing. The key word in this definition is interpreting. Every instance of perception occurs in some situational context, and this context can affect what one perceives.
