ESS104H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Radium, Actinium, Periodic Trends
Document Summary
Reading lecture 3 age of earth (the times) Mr strutt suggests that radium accounts for the internal heat of the earth. However, the actual quantity per cubic centimeter of radium in the interior would be less than the radium found in superficial igneous rocks. Either the rate of heat production by radium diminishes as you approach earth, or the interior of earth is different in constitution from external crust. Evidence that a change in radium took place at 1500c with depth of about 45 miles. Conclusion from this: earth consists of non-radioactive substance with rigidity like steel, and with average temp of 1500c. Other conclusions: below a depth of 30 or 40 miles, there is no variation in density. Dalton"s atomic theory: units of chemical changes where molecules can be built and resolved. Maxwell: hydrogen in stars excluded possibility of one element to another. Crookes: elements formed out of the same protyle.
