Document Summary

Chapter 17 - a matter for scientists and society, conserving forested landscapes: Wild and semi-wild plants and animals contribute significantly to nutrition, health care, income, and culture in developing areas. Depleting resources makes them unavailable and increases impoverishment. Some perceive forest exploitation as a means to escape poverty. At least 1/4th of the world"s rainforests are at least nominally protected by some sort of conservation legislation. Over 100,000 terrestrial protected areas, covering 12% of land area. Tropical forest protected areas: are designed to prevent deforestation and thus secure the conservation of biodiversity and natural resources. 23% of moist tropical forests are under national conservation designation. Effectiveness of protected areas can be undermined by vulnerability toward forest conversion and degradation. Leakage: forest protection can displace deforestation activities to other regions. Integrated conservation and development projects integrate biodiversity conservation with human livelihood objectives. Indigenous reserves: are officially recognized lands allocated for the use and habitation of native amerindian people.
