Document Summary
Colonial urbanization and urban management in kenya by otiso (2005) Before settlers: kenyans were rural dwellers except on the coast (impacted in 1800s) After settlers: restricted by kenya-uganda railway and kenyans were deemed as unhealthy, housing was deemed too expensive for kenyans and those who had were sojourners. Resisted the oppression: worked in groups and gained independence in 1963. Urbanization was hard because of primitive materials like mud: arab on coast allowed trade in east africa and later controlled by portuguese to expand, many coastal centers were trade and pol"t focused like mombasa by portuguese. Increase demand for ivory and other trades created caravan routes which did not benefit the pre-industrial coast but overridden them. Imperial british east africa company controlled in 1888 and missionary centers built especially in freretown for freed slaves homeless after being in indian-ocean slave trade. Failed to meet needs of people around them.
