Quanitaive descripions of characterisics of a communicaion. Change in coverage of an issue over ime: claim to be objecive and systemaic, create transparency. Can now be used for even qualitaive and unstructured informaion: visual images, websites showing pictures (daing sites), animated cartoons, lyrics of songs, etc. What needs to be counted: words: frequency of appearance, subjects and themes: search for obvious and latent content, value posiions: voice of writer, who was blamed, Coding: need to design a coding schedule and create a coding manual, coding schedule: all the variables considered in the content analysis. A form onto which the data are entered. Nature of ofence, gender, occupaion, et. c: coding manual: the possible inputs/codes for the variables. A set of instructures to coders that includes all possible categories for each dimension to be coded. Nature of ofence: robbery, violence, thet, drug, etc. Occupaion: professionals, farmers, employees, skilled workers, etc.
