Buddhism Feb 2/5
Material after the second test, will be covered in the third test, the movement of
tekhnoham and the Dalai lama.
don’t worry about humanistic Buddhism in Taiwan and China
Will deal with movements in south east asia, Thailand in future classes.
These countries dealing with a time at colonial period.
Without colonial rule people didn’t know how to bring country in to future
There is the question of modernity
Something bad about colonial rule, they were interested rich resources, very little
investments made in this countries, the gernal education level remained low,
exploited for cheap labour, people have understanding how to keep country at
pace with global developments.
Many academics from west said how tsrilanka and Thailand should manage
What work in west doesn’t work automatically it will work in the east, western
countries have gone through industrialization have education system allow
youngsters participate in society( management levels foundational kind of levels)
have knowledge and skills to allow the development of there economics, south
east Asian countries the feeling of any of such softwares, they may have some
machines brought in to these countries, creating the range of colonial rules, what
kind of future these countries were expecting, people were very puzzling, due to
not having a clear idea what to do with their own future, development defined in
terms of western style economic progress, there were something about south
Asian countries, about there own traditional values, their spiritual values, values
like Buddhism and in Hinduism, many such values can be seen as obstacles to
development, these values seen as keeping one self from having so many desires.
What is the turning of this capitalistic model, the very foundation of principle in
western economics, desires has to be met by a kind of satisfaction, between the
desire and satisfaction you have production.
For a country to develop need a motivation which can relate to a “desire”
Try to have western style influence and remain traditional values
Development seeing from modernization perspective is materialistic,
universalistic, and unidirectional.
Universalistic meaning such ad development model seemed to be applicable to
everyone country in the world. If you want to modernize archaic society toward
modernity you need to follow same kind of model to be proven successful in the
west, the idea its universalistic applies to everyone country in the world, any ideas
opposed to these materials can be seen as obstacles to modernization.
The development agenda of how religion restricted economics.
Their were great minds like Gandhi who openly criticized this form of thinker,
said these ideas were misleading the indian people, those living under poverty not
only lost money, most importantly because of there belief in this value of
modernity, materialistic, universalistic, indirectional.
Many of these country lost dignity, blab la, a lot of them worried they cant catch
up to the success of the west, India was so backward at a time, no chance at all to catch up with flow of economics, that’s mentality at time a lot of people stopped
progression, scared of west so good, many foreign countries countries trying to
take advantage of people, setting up companies there, putting cheap wage and
exploiting people, not a kind of colonial rule in name but in actuality its no
different. India had such a problem people look up to modernity model as future,
if they have this understanding, they can’t bring india up to this advance state of
modernity they lose confidence in selves.
Gandhi said instead of following foot steps of west, they should make their own
economic model, development shouldn’t be just measured in material it can be
masured in spirituality, moral standards, general behavior etc. should count as a
whole, in this grand model of development for Indian people.
If Indian people can free themselves from this superstitious belief development
can be measured in a spiritualistic way can find satisfaction and happiness in own
life, to sustain own living.
“ tO SUSTAIN ONES OWN LIVING
Earning a wage for the purpose of sustaining ones own living. You don’t need to
be rich Gandhi said as a message to indian people, and don’t need to look up to
western be and compare your self to their means. As long as your able to sustain
own living and earn wage, you get respect for your self through this process,
that’s first step Indian people should take.
There is the concept of “ Village industry”, if every village could develop a
product a family style industry, through industry these families not only able to
sustain own lives can share resources not in a compatative way, in a way though
that its complimentary to each other, village B is making so, to live a happy and
simple life to not rely on any foreign aids, that according to Gandhi would be very
basis for development according to in India, education is not just a mean so
youngsters can find a better job in the future, in the same way youngsters can find
a luxurious living, education is important for both knowledge and the inner
spiritual kind of maturity, Gandhi was so famous not just because of this, but his
insistence of leading a non violent kind of protest, against the colonial rule, he
was fighting for independence of India at that time, the sad ending of Gandhi he
was murdered. Message was important of “nonviolent” showed world south Asian
country people, said theres a alternative development model versus the western
model of modernity people were looking up to time.
“ Village industry” relying on labor work, gaining the respect and dignity of one
self, as a way of earning your own wage, to sustain your own life, and in a non
violent also on the basis of religious teachings, these are teachings of Gandhi on
the aspects that became so influential.
Gandhi talked about the future of india it’s an India term called Sarvodoya, sarva
means all and adaya means awakening.
Sarvodoya means the awakening of all, not an accidental religious kind of waking
he had in mind, something more practical/mundane. Come to an understanding of
india at time, how its different then western countries through aspects and pillars
should have own vision uniqueness, religious etc.
That kind of awakening is to be founding all India, everyone should participate in
this kind of village industry, this kind of version everyone can sustain in there own way, without relyin
