Therapeutics: the treatment of disease by drugs and other means. Pharmacology is not concerned primarily with the drug use, but rather, actions and fate in living organisms. Natural preparations, galenicals: crude preparations, drying plant/animal materials. Isolated from natural sources by physical and chemical extraction and purification: chemical modification of pure compounds from natural sources, e. g. Barbiturate: custom design to fit with a particular receptor. Biological drugs: antibodies, purified enzyme, immunologically based drugs. Chapter 2 drug solubility, absorption, and movement across body membranes. To be pharmacologically active, drug must have solubility in aqueous fluids of body to reach site of action. Drugs that are positively or negatively charged can readily associate with water and are water soluble.
