Document Summary

Freud: the future of illusion: humanity as creating a divine father to replace the human father- unconscious internalizations of our primordial need for relief from insecurity/tragedy of existence. Civilization requires the renunciation of instinct/repression of instinct: task of civilization is to defend us against nature, nature can never be fully subjected to man. Life and the universe need to be made unfrightening. How is this done: humanization of nature. If death is not just spontaneous but the evil act of an evil will, for example: relief and way to regain some control- we can try to bribe or appease these forces. Gods: arranged state of nature and then left it alone, only occasionally intervene with miracles. It would be an enormous relief to the psyche to remove the father/child complex and heal it.
