Document Summary

Why tolerate religion: there are features of religion that warrant principles toleration on moral and epistemic grounds, matters of conscience---rawls and liberty of conscience. Particularly- morally and epistemically distinctive: making it so that it ought to be tolerated, apart from legal context. What is the sacred? (as opposed to the profane) If theres something important about religious belief and practice demanding legal solicitude, its connected to demands of conscience that religion imposes on believers: apart and forbidden: demand respecting the forbidden. Goal: identify religion in a way to see why it has moral and legal claim on special treatment. Timothy macklem: what distinguishes religious belief is that its based on faith and not reasons. Faith is a rival to reason: commitment that can"t be established by reason. Faith is required where quest for reasons is impossible but commitment even without reasons is valuable.
