POL200Y1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Foreign Body
Document Summary
The state of nature: a poetic image of the natural human condition. Opens the chapter by mentioning the doctrine of political equality. Says every other thinker on this topic has been wrong. In what senses are we equal: force: the weakest man can still kill the strongest man through some means; same rough amount of force and physical aspect, we cannot see other people"s wisdom or virtues very well. We all think about ourselves as better or superior than one another. When it comes to running our own lives, we think we know best. We all have an estimation of our own worth and wisdom. H doesn"t comment on whether this notion is correct or not. Hobbes has debunked most of the things that would make us think that we are unequal. In this thinking, common sense seems to be against hobbes. Says the state of nature is to be avoided at all costs.
