PSL201 Mar 4 Endocrine 6: Energy Metabolism
An Overview of Whole-Body Metabolism
- energy metabolism: the way your body stores and utilizes energy
- because food intake is intermittent the body must tor nutrients during
periods of intake and then break them down between meals
- blood glucose levels must be maintained because the brain depends on
glucose
Energy Intake, Utilization, and Storage
1) biomolecules can be broken down to smaller molecules, in the process
releasing energy that can be used for driving cellular processes
2) biomolecules can be used to synthesize other molecules needed by cells for
normal function growth and repair
3) biomolecules in excess of those required for energy and synthesis of essential
molecules are converted to energy storage molecules that provide energy
between meals
Carbohydrates
- usually found as glucose in the bloodstream
- transported by glucose transporters
- once in a cell:
o amino acids are used for protein synthesis
o catabolized for energy by proteolysis
o can be oxidized for energy
o can be converted to glycogen for storage
o glycogen can be broken down to glucose by glycogenesis
Proteins
- AA rather than proteins are transported in the blood
- In cells:
o AA are used for synthesis of proteins
o AA are catabolized for energy by proteolysis
o proteins function as AA stores and can be broken back down to AA
Fat
- triglycerides are transported in the bloodstream as lipoproteins (protein
lipid containing particles)
- triglycerides at the outer surface of lipoproteins are broken down by the
enzyme lipoprotein lipase
o located inside surface of capillaries throughout the body and very
dense I adipose tissue
o breaks down triglyceride into fatty acids and monoglycerides
- inside cells:
o can be oxidized for energy
o combined with glycerol to form triglycerides and stored in fat
droplets
ususally occurs in adipocytes
