Motivation: physiological and psychological processes underlying initiation of behaviours specific goals. Motives: the initiating factor (thoughts, feelings, sensations, and bodily processes) Drive: biological trigger to seek out something we lack. Homeostasis: body"s physiological processes that help maintain a consistent internal state. Allostasis: motivation not only by current needs, but also by anticipation of future needs. Hunger controlled by homeostasis, but also complex cognitive & emotional factors: controlled by hypothalamus (at the bottom of the brain, stimulating lateral hypothalamus eating, stimulating ventromedial region stop eating. Glucose: primary energy source for brain & rest of the body: glucostats- neurons that detect glucose levels in the extracellular matrix. Glucostats sense too low triggers hypothalamus feelings of hunger. Satiation: point when we are no longer motivated to eat. Love fatty foods: specialized receptors on the tongue sensitive to fat triggers endorphin & dopamine release. Love sugar: sugar & amphetamines & cocaine- all stimulate dopamine release in nucleus accumbens.
