Document Summary
Consciousness is a persons subjective awareness, including thoughts, perceptions, experiences of the world, and self-awareness: we go through many changes in consciousness everyday. Thoughts and perceptions are constantly adapting to new situations. Infradian rhythm: any rhythm that occurs over a period of time longer than a day (ex: bear hibernating, menstrual cycle in humans) Ultradian rhythm: rhythms that occur more frequently (ex: heart rate, urination and some hormonal activities occur in 90-120 minute cycles. Entrainment: when biological rhythms become synchronized to external cues such as light, temperature or even a clock. Because of its effects on the scn-melatonin system, light is the primary entrainment mechanism for most mammals. Endogenous: biological rhythms that are generated by our body independent of external cues such as light. To study this researchers encouraged people to stay in caves/isolation chambers for extended periods of time to see how their rhythms change.
